I started having too much attitude, that ‘I Knew All’.

With time, I had learned so much about the mystical world but I didn’t learn anything about myself…

In that ‘All’, where was I standing?

What I had become in so many years, I understood when I received a big jolt from my friend’s father…

It was my son Aditya’s birthday and my wife and I decided to throw a small party for his friends at a popular restaurant close by. Bhavna had invited Rajeev’s daughter too for the get-together. My son’s birthday brought much excitement in the family as everybody animatedly discussed the games and events to be organized for the party.

The evening started to warm up gradually as guests trickled in. After a while, Bhavna came up to me and said, “Rajeev’s father is here to drop Lavanya (name changed).’’ I went to the entrance to welcome him and requested him to join us.

He agreed with his typical lopsided smile and followed me to a quieter corner of the room. He was a man of medium stature and wiry built. As we waited for the snacks to be served, Mr. Gupta (name changed) turned and looked squarely into my eyes.

“So, Kapil’’, he said, “Rajeev praises you a lot and has a very high regard for you.’’

I gave an embarrassed laugh. “Oh, he is too generous,’’ I said modestly.

Mr. Gupta continued on a serious note, “He told me that you are doing a lot of mumbo jumbo stuff with spirits and deities.”

I shifted uneasily in my chair as I was a bit uncertain about his tone and the words mumbo jumbo were beginning to irritate me.

“I do not do any mumbo jumbo,” I said testily. “I help people and sometimes souls in need. It is with God’s blessings that I am able to do this. What I did for Rajeev was no mumbo jumbo... it was only after my prayers and rituals that he received help and relief.’’ I could feel anger welling up.

How dare this old fool pronounce judgment on what I did, without knowing anything about it!

Much to my chagrin, he gave a low sarcastic laugh, “Seriously Kapil, you have lost it. All this is nonsense ... ghosts, spirits, black magic rituals, goddesses, apparitions... all bullshit...

an educated person like you should not be talking about this. I don’t believe in this nonsense at all. I have told my son to stay clear of all this rubbish.”

He continued, “Once a person dies... he dies... end of story... there are no ghosts and rebirths and such things... I think you have been hypnotized by your Master”

I interrupted him, “Will you please STOP!’’
